Well, I finally took delivery of the Nikon D3000 from Spyral (damned Canadian customs added 3 days to the delivery time!!). The only thing I think it's lacking is a good zoom lens. I want one with VR and was thinking of this one here. Where is a good place to buy Nikon lenses and how do the specs on this one seem? I don't even know how much it is yet, but it seems like a great lens.

edit..I think a 200 zoom would be all I need...I was looking at this one:

Congrats on your purchase Richy. I just did a car for a professioanl photographer and man is there alot of stuff in talking pics. He was looking at the pics on the forums and explained in great detail about the trouble I had with the a few of the Lambo pics I took and a few other red cars I showed him. Have you tried out your new toy yet?

I've been on Afternoons (5pm-3am) so I was reading the manual to learn about all the stuff it'll do. I have just kinda played with it. I've got an XC90 that got dropped off tonight. I'll be taking photos of it to put for my next S&S. We'll see if my work looks any better..hahahaha.

I've got a Sigma 70-200mm for my Canon. I really like that lens. It stays on my camera more than any other one lens. The glass isnt as good as Canon L's, but I'm not a pro and dont want to spend $1600 for an L.
Maybe a few years from now.

Also a lot of good advice on the forum of Nikonians :: The Nikon User Community. Used to be free but i still think you can look at it. Another one is Bjorn R's site on nikon lenses. I have the lens you referenced in the firt post and it's a good deal at the price. I've been very happy with it. Got mine refurbished online from Roberts photo and haven't had a lick of problem with it - even in difficult weater in Yellowstone.

I use an 18-105 as the every day lens but I want something faster so looking at the 18-50 F2.8 Tamron with vibration control.

If you read the experts, may will say stay with a slower lens and just use the iso to get the extra stops needed for handheld in lower light.

Truism of photography: you can have fast glass, you can have cheap glass, you can have quality, but you can't have all three.

I'm taking up a gracious offer from a fellow DB'er to get this lens at a great price...just when you thought you thought of every reason to love this place!!

I am after the VR. I cannot find any definite statement on how many stops it helps on a 17-50 range lens.

VR is good and I know it claims to extend f-stops but I think most of the claims are exaggerated a little. I think one stop improvement is reasonable on that short a lens. On the wide end, I see very little need for VR.

I was checking more on VR and I see some say you may get stops from VR on a short telephoto. For example, I was in a museum taking pics (they did not allow flash). I had my 18-105 on and I was shooting 1/15th @ F4.5 to 5.6 (more or less wide open) at ISO 1600 to get a decent exposure... A F2.8 VR would not help that much...but it would be nice to know I had it.

Couldn't hurt to have that little extra on the short end. Was just saying the benefit isn't nearly as much as on the long end. I've been happy with my 18-55 kit lens and didn't see the need to trade it out for the VR version. I did see the benefit on the 55-200 and spent the extra money on the VR. Next lens for me will either be the new 35mm prime or whatever I can afford on the longer end (Sigma bigma or the 70-300 VR).
