i had 55-300 for my camera but sold it thinking not gona need it. then got 18-250 and it was fun for a while, but now i switched to 16-50 with supersonic motor which is nice and quiet unlike other lenses i have. my dad managed to get promaster 70-300 and its pretty good. just dont use it too much
Lens selection is all bout what you want to do with the camera. I do some car pics and the 18-55 works well for that. I also do wildlife (or attempt to) and even my 55-200 is a little on the short side to do what I want. What you are going to be taking pics of is a big consideration in what you want. Birds - probably need the longest glass you can get. Sports at night - length would be good but the speed of the glass becomes more important (a 400 5.8 isn't going to do much in Friday night lights).
I'd split the difference. look for a good used 55-200 VR from the many people that feel they need something more and get a good editing software of a 35mm prime with the difference.
