Hi, Did I hear right, late model Toyotas are not clear coated, they are single stage paint? If so can you still polish them? I have a white Toyota coming up with some oxidation and would like some suggestions on the best way to go. Thanks , Bob
I would defer to the experts on polishing but in terms of Toyota production, always check if it has clearcoat cuz different factories have different processes. (i.e. if pad changes color) Even the same model cars but from different factories can have some differences in how they were made so always stay cautious.
Bob..wow, I didn't think any modern manufacturer would still use single stage paint anymore? It's no biggie if they do however, just polish like you normally would. Like mentioned above, the pad will change colour right away which will immediately tell you whether you're dealing with ss or base clear. SS paint will come out just fine after polishing too. Make sure you shoot some pics though.
Toyota tends to have thin paint even on other colours. I had done a lot of work on toyotas and even on other colours the reading were barley at 100 especially on the doors. Most manufactures use a white primer under regular white paint, and usually the primer is a little thicker than the regualr gray primer. I would be interested in finding out but my guess is that it has clear coat, just not much by the readings.
guys come on search at least. we keep getting a lot of double threads http://www.detailingbliss.com/forum/f37/toyota-scion-white-paint-single-stage-12921.html
maybe you have different white like pearl or something? or your car has been repainted, did you buy it brand new or used?
Hi, I did do a serach and found nothing definitive! thanks for the suggestion. What maybe ask was I read on a Toyota board they don't clear coat, so I figure people here would know for sure. Thanks Again , Bob
I don't think anybody paints with single stage anymore. If its at least a 2000 or newer, my guess is that its base/clear. Even my 04 work van is base/clear.
I have a 2006 white Toyota Tacoma and I took some readings this past weekend and most of the panels hardly reached 100 on the readings besides on the bed where I have had it repainted.....I feel your pain. I can't polish it anymore I am too afraid of going through.
Any idea when they stopped using enamel? I'm gonna look like an idiot going through the mall parking lot with my PTG looking for white Hondas!
If your readings are even in the 90s you would be safe with PF on a green or black pad to remove minor marring from washing the vehicle without issue. That combo will remove such a small amount of clear that I doubt a PTG would record the difference.
Some parts were actually reading in the 60's and I have never had to do a major polish on the truck since I have maintained it. Whenever I have taken the rotary to it it has always been a light polish and cutting pad.
I can't remember the exact date, but it's really recent, like 06 maybe? I don't think it's consistent, not all of their whites are SS, but one was until really late. I'm pretty sure they used it on multiple cars, and changed the color with the model change. So an accord might have stopped using that color in 04, but a civic might not have stopped using it in 06. I don't know for sure, I read it a while ago. Maybe someone can send them an e-mail?
