My mom backed into my brothers car and left some deep scratches on both vehicles. I have included a picture of one of the cars (2006 Accord). The scratches on the other car are of the same type and depth (on a black 2006 Altima). I can feel most with my finger nail and I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation on how to remedy them? I would really like to avoid a respray, so there were two methods I was thinking of trying. 1. Wet sand them down with 2000 grit, compound, and then polish out; as demonstrated in this guys video. I would then probably apply some optimum opti coat 2 to strengthen the clear coat. 2. Use many light applications of touch up paint and then try and level and polish the paint to uniformity as done by this member in this post Any idea which one would give me a better chance of success? Best results? The result does not have to be perfect, I am just trying to get rid of the glaring imperfections. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
you need to touch up paint, the bumper is down to the plastic and you're def down quite a bit of clear in those scratches
Wetsanding is going to reduce the scratches, but you will still be able to see them because it's a dark color. IMO, your best bet is to touch up the deepest scratches and leveling them. You will need to touch up the scratches about 2 to 3 times to make sure you are higher than the paint surface. Do yourself a favor a get some thin brushes from Michaels. Try to fill the scratch area only and make sure you cover the scratch edges so you don't have any valleys when you wetsand them. I have repaired worst scratches than that.
Awesome advice! Thank you both! The more I think about it, the touch up paint would be the safest and best bet for getting satisfactory results. I will try and document the procedure when I attempt it. Do you think I should apply a touch up of clear coat over the touch up paint (which I will make sure and limit to the scratched surface)? Thanks!
Yes you will want to apply a bit of clear over the touch up paint. Most touch up paints from the dealers come with paint and clear. If you don't apply a thin layer of clear you will prob have to continue touching up the paint... just my :2cents:
you don't have to apply clear, but if you want to ... make sure it's the last coat. Try to put nice thin coats that cover the entire scratch. You'll be wetsanding last coat of clear you apply if you put thick layers.
