im thinking about trying an electric shaver. i have basically no experience with them. always have wet shaved, but for the past year or so, i've been lazy, so i use a cheap beard trimmer to "clean up" real quick. the thing is, i usually go for the "5 oclock shadow" look, which is easily achieved with the beard trimmer. its just crazy uncomfortable to do. i rarely even wet shave with a razor anymore because when i do i look like im 15 years old.

what are some good options? id rather not waste my money on a cheaper one. im looking for something mid-range so i can see how i like it before i spring for an expensive one like those self cleaning norelco ones. i have no idea the difference between the circular ones or the others. is it even possible to gauge how much is taken off with an electric shaver to get the "shadowed look"?

I have tried the traditional electric razor that goes back and forth across your skin and the Norelco brands which have circular blades that cut as the 3 blade heads turn in circles, across your face.

The traditional back and forth razor for me, tended to pull and hurt my beard while the Norelco cuts and does not hurt doing it.

Norelco blades come in a pack of the 3 blades, and then tend to cost around $30 or so, while the other shaver blades I believe cost less.

All shaver blades do get dull and depending on how dense your beard is, may wear out faster, and you have to keep replacing them to get a good, fast, shave. This probably higher cost, may be a factor when you compare it to disposable blades being sold today vs how long does one of these disposables last me,,,

An electric razor will never cut as good as a pre-oil and lather shave with hot water in the shower though. But then you said you dont want to shave so close because it makes you look 15 again, right ?

The norelco shavers are not getting good ratings any longer as the older ones of even 10 years ago; check consumer reports, amazon.com, etc., and see what they say if you want..

I dont know of any razor that will just cut so far and leave it the "shadowed lood".

For cleaning, I buy a product from Norelco that you spray into the heads that cleans and lubricates them lightly, after I rinse it out in hot water. You should not have to ever take the individual blades out for cleaning but if you do, do not mix the cutter and the blade heads up, or they wont work as good. they are all lapped together and are meant to stay together for the life of their usage..

Good luck with your research !

No help here. After about ten years with Norelcos, when I investigated a replacement for the last time I went with DE razors, traditional shaving soap and a brush. I tried Remingtons when I first started shaving many years ago and never cared for them.
