I relize there are lots of factors... but

i took my car in to get an oil change... no biggy. Well they call saying i will need new tires soon.
My car was 40k km (not miles, km) 10k of which had my winters. so these tires have under 20k miles..... they are warn... wtf. I thought they should last double.

All my dirving has been city..... arg.... im nt happy

What kind of tires? Check tirerack.com and see what the tread life is listed at. With some peformance tires you're doing good to get 20k miles.

how you drive the car, how the tire pressure was maintained, vehicle's alignment, etc all come into play here.

Are they saying you need new tires because they are un-evenly worn, or is the tread dept just worn down?

I have 62K miles on my wife's Explorer, still original tires in the back. They are Goodyear tires.

I have Michelin's on mine, best tires ever. About 52K miles and still PLENTY left.

Like stated before some tired wear more quickly than others. What kind do you have and what size? High performance tires do wear more quickly most of the time.

When you check them out, see how they are worn... if it is evenly then they are just worn out and thats it, if they exhibit any signs of uneven wear, then there is a problem that needs to be taken care of (alignment, repair suspension, etc).

Also compare the wear of the front tires to the back, side to side, etc.

This will help if your not familiar with this stuff...
    HOW TO READ TIRE WEAR

Either way, if they are indeed down the metal, they are dangerously worn and gotta get replaced.

    Good rules for tires
    1. If they look bald and drive poorly.
    2. If you stick a US penny in the tread and the tread does not reach the top of Lincolns head.

Check your tires.. I don't know how many miles I've been on my tires but I've had them since summer of 2005 and they're doing well...they have a healthy amount of tread.

There is not a chance in hell your car is down to the wires Mike. I've seen them myself, and they have a good 10k let in them. While the turanzas do wear fairly quickly due to their compound, they will NOT be done after 30k kms. I'll look at them myself the next time I'm around your car.
