You can find used XT's in that price range all day long. The price on new ones has come down so much. Id also love to switch over to the 40D, awesome camera.

Phil, I actually bought my Rebel XT at Staples (got it for soooooo cheap, it was on sale plus I found a 20% off coupon...). My lenses are bought from Amazon, they always have pretty damn good prices!
List of equipment will depend on what you're shooting. For detailing related stuff you dont really need anything except for the camera, lens, and a computer. Ive recommended to Scott that he posts his pictures there for some constructive feedback. There for sale section is also a great place to find used equipment.
That is a very good price,the cheapest I have found here in Toronto is at Henry's just like yours but$550 and another one body only for $400.
Ive decided that Im definitely NOT going to do this. Itll cause WAY too much controversy here, dont want anymore of that. Scott, Im sure youd love to do something like this, go for it.

I love it how you're still deciding, hah!!! The Nikon D80 is a great camera, you cannot go wrong. The Xti that I recommended is fantastic, too, and very comparable. How about you take the plunge and go with the 40D that Scott just bought? Also, I don't know anything about Nikon lenses so I'm not much help there.
canon is really out doing nikon with the 40d by far...it is honestly the best deal...my oppinion canon is a much easier to learn on...and yes i have shot with both canon and nikon...i work for a photographer and shoot with a diffrent camera like every day...but of course its up to you...go to best buy and try the cameras out..they have the 40d there and alot of nikons..aslo the canon rebel xti..wich is also a great camera...but i would spend the extra money and buy the 40d
