I was trying to download an upgrade to some third party software on my PC at home, and the download would not complete. I got a pop up message from XP saying that I did not have the administrative rights to perform this function! Any tips on reinstating admin rights to your own computer??? I tried the online help through both Microsoft and Compaq, but never found the right answer. :crasy:
The admin and other accounts (like guest) are managed through the user accounts menu in the control panel. You can add and delete accounts. Unless you have a log on screen when you boot (like if you have to log onto another domain) you should be using an account with admin privileges. iF you do have two accounts, you log off one (using CAD) and logon the other. It will likely ask you for a password. You can try to add admin privileges but if you have been installing sw (you often need admin privileges), it may be some bug. Good luck.
Are you logged into an account that has administrative privileges? There's a chance that it's a virus and/or spyware. Accounts don't "all of a sudden" lose admin rights. Now sure, once in a while you may lose permissions to a specific folder, but never lose your admin privileges. Either you are logged in as a different user that has limited rights, or someone changed your account status.
XP Home or Pro? There are a number of security items that are not part of XP Home that can affect third party software. clicky
