I am looking at a Canon 30D with a 17-85mm IS lens... Anyone have any info on this lens... I don't have to get the lens with that package but if it is good I would like to pick it up... Please advise Thanks in advance!
What'd you get? I love the Canon xxD series. I have a 40D and love it. I started with a digital rebel xti (400D I believe) and while it was good, the build wasn't nearly as solid and it was just too small. The xxD series has a much more rugged/solid build, is largr and fits in my hands so much better, and the ergonomics are infinitely better. I haven't used that lens you mentioned, so I can't comment on that. But I can say invest in high quality lenses, you'll be glad you did. I bought a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 lens for like $300 when I started. It was good and it got me by. But this past summer I invested in a 70-200 f/2.8 IS L lens. Holy moly. The difference is well worth the cost. The focusing is super fast, super accurate, and super quiet, the fixed aperture makes indoor/bad lighting stuff so much better, and the colors and sharpness are unbelievable. I don't think I could ever part with it. OK I'm done. Hope you enjoy your new toy! (Oh and if you got a Canon, check out photography-on-the.net/forums. Excellent Canon photography forum, no par with DB/autopia. Actually I'd say it's even a step above them. OK, I'm really done now...
I got a 30D with the EFS 17-85MM IS lens I mentioned The lens is AWESOME... I used it at my sons soccer game last night and caught some quick fire shots of him scoring a goal... AMAZING!! Thanks for the hook up on the forum:thumb: Will have to check it out!
Ohh ya... Last night was fun at my sons soccer game... The first 3 are rapid fire shots of my son as he was making a goal...(3rd picture down, look at the face of the kid in light blue) Here he is warming up at goal
sweet deal. learning the camera is one of the greatest parts of photography. Shooting is free to i say shoot away and enjoy.
Sweet. Are you familiar with RAW? After you get a handle on exposure (shutter speed, aperture, ISO) and can really dial that in well, start shooting in RAW. It's so much better. I RARELY shoot in jpeg anymore. Only if I'm at an event where I know I'm going to be taking literally hundreds of photos (BMX race for ex).
:thumb: Yes, I am having fun so far! Dark blue shirt and then in the green (goalie) jersey is my spawn.....:thumb: Familiar, yes... Experianced, no...lol I am having a challenging time getting my head around the basics....lol
One way to get to know your camera is to get the manual out and try every function. You can just in a chair and do things like changing white balance, taking pics in backlight situations (adjusting spot vs average or exposure comp), etc. It will help you get an idea on what your camera can do. Of course, taking pics in various situations gets practice too. If you have issues with exposure for some reason, use the camera bracketing mode.
I highly recommend that forum I posted. Tons of information and tons of links in the stickies for newbs that are crazy helpful. Also, there are a ton of books out there that explain it really well. I found that just doing a bunch of reading on it helped me understand it, and then once I understand it, it took a lot less time to figure out how to apply that info. But I highly recommend you put in in Manual mode and leave it there and force yourself to learn that way. Then once you learn how all the settings relate to each other and what effects they have on the photo, they you will be able to switch to other modes (Av, Tv) and actually use them as they are designed to be used.
