Just launched for purchase in the UK is Meguiars NXT Tech Wax 2.0 - a new and improved version of Tech Wax, itself a well liked product for its ability to deepen a paint finish slightly in the looks department, though many complained of its low durability.

Meguiars have sought to set this right with the new version - Tech Wax 2.0 - while also improving on the formula for looks as well... So, to put it to the test in this series of threads, the new formula product has been applied to a section of my test car for assessment of its performance in looks and durability...

    Part 1 - Application Day: 6th April

The application car of choice is a flame red Vauxhall Astra Estate - you may remember, it was detailed by Bryan and myself about a year ago and since then its seen some.. abuse! Well, it is a working car, goes down farm tracks and doesn't exactly get washed with two buckets! Ideal car for this trial then - as full on paintwork preparation is not the point here. I want to see what this product can do with general paintwork that has seen some care, but is not perfect. Can this product do anything for this non-perfect paint as this is going to be on the majority of cars which it is applied to by the general public.

So, the car test section before: it will be applied to the driver's side of the bonnet and the driver's side wing. Before:

An example of the swirls the product had to face - amazing what a year of hard work and neglect can do to a finish!

NXT (liquid version) was applied using the enclosed foam applicator. A little product is all that is required, over application can result in smearing that is difficult to remove. The product was spread and then worked in with light to medium pressure for a few passes before being left to dry. In the cold damp conditions of the day, drying time seemed to be around twenty minutes before the residue removed easily, and it did remove effortlessly.

The results of one application could be seen on this paintwork - the red had deepened a little and the product certainly retained the old product's ability to enhance a finish.

A second application was made an hour later to try and get better filling, to ensure even coverage and to enhance protection a little further. Again, this was applied as above and removed with ease providing a decent drying time or around twenty minutes was left.

The results of the application on the swirls first of all:

And the finish achieved - in pictures it is hard to tell, but the red was slightly deepened by the application and the paintwork now feels slick to the touch:

The product was also applied to the driver's side rear 3/4, and the driver's side of the bootlid for trialling in traditionally dirtier areas of paintwork.

A constant flow of water showed fast sheeting with only a small amount of water left behind, whereas with a spray, tight beads were formed. Not indicative of protection the latter, but of interest none the less from a looks perspective.

All in all, on a looks front, the product performs well - retains the ability of the old NXT, which is no bad thing, and with a little in the way of enhanced filling over the old version which is also no bad thing. For the money, or indeed for much more, it is very impressive.

Durability of the product will now be assessed and updated regularly in a series of threads - watch this space! :)

Nice test Dave. it's funny because I actually tried it for the first time tonight too. I did it on a daily driven beater, and I was quite pleased with the results! The only thing different I did was buff off the wax using a light mist of Meg Ultimate Detailer which helped the removal and boosted the shine a notch

I'm anxious to see the durability, but for a OTC product and for the price...not bad at all imho!

I liked the finish of the old NXT, but durability did put me off... this is reputed to be better so we'll see how it goes :)
