Ok, so when I got rid of the D60, I said DSLR's were too complicated and I didn't have time to learn. I suck. It's going to be crappy out all the time real soon, so I figured what better way to learn than to get another one and try again. This time I got a D3000 setup from Amazon. They are in Seattle, so I ordered it this morning and they delivered it to my office at 5:00pm. Pretty cool. I took a few pics with the 18-55 lens tonight. What better subject than my kitten Pia (girlfriend named her Princess Pia).

Damn Tom. Nice camera. I am so in need of a DLSR. Just can't afford it right now. I want a digital camcorder first. Then a camera.

Isn't the D3000 more complicated than the D60?

I think you'd be pulling your hair out with my D200 in your hands, haha.

btw, i know you love to buy things, but this is something you do want for sure.

Nikon 35mm 1.8. Good range, fast lens, okay bokeh. Good walk around prime in my opinion. It's pretty cheap too. You'd better act fast! I slept on it over a month ago, and it was sold out overnight.

he can actually use the nikkor 35mm 1.8 in the D3000 now too. as the D60 didn't have an auto focus motor in the body

Hey guys. I picked up a 16-85 wide angle when I got my D60 so I could take pics of cars inside my shop. Is the lens you mentioned above a good everyday lens? I was looking at a macro for REAL close up pics but was wondering if the lens you mentioned would be good for close ups and everyday pics?

911 it is hands down the default lens you should have for nikon! It is with out a doubt the best Bang for the buck as far as speed (light input / etc) the 1.8f will let you take pictures in just about a dark room (need a tripod though) . Remember with a DX frame size in the D60 and D300 it isn't going to be true 35mm it is more like 52.5mm.

    just google it.

also search FLickr for their this lens tag to see what it can do.

it can be hard to find as everyone with a nikon wants one. :)

You probably don't need a macro lens to take pictures of cars and its paint defects. Macro lenses are for things like insects or flowers in detail. 35mm is a great range in my opinion. It's plenty for me because I mostly do landscape or take pictures of cars.

What I did when I started was borrow my friend's 18-200mm and see which ranges I liked best. Try keeping your 16-85 at 35mm to see if you like the range or not. I think this is better value than 50mm just because of its range.

D3000 is the new one. It has more features, bigger screen..yadda yadda. I am not upgrading, I sold my old one because I didn't like dealing with "thinking" when taking a picture. However, I am fickle, and I had the urge to spend $600 on something yesterday, so I bought a camera.

the d3000 does for sure have more "bells and whistles" than the D60.
The D3000 is a good choice. the little "on screen guide" is supposed to be nice for us non thinkers. :) i switched from my D90 to the D5000 recently for the same reason. the d5000 as the guts that i liked from the D90 with a smaller body so i'm happy. Slapped on a 18-270 Tamron and i'm good to go :)

Hey Tom, if you really want to make the most of your investment, do some research/reading on photography composition or just take some photography classes so you know how to take some really badass pictures. :)

Just thought I'd give you some friendly advice before you go on and buy an even more expensive Nikon, haha.

LOL..I am going to take a photography class. I set my budget to $1800 for a camera and equipment. I'm heading to Cameras West this weekend to pick up some incidentals.

This picture highlights the aspect of depth of field. Only one small section of the M105 bottle is in focus. This is where you have to go to aperture mode, stop it down, and then take the pic.

In English Bunky! I have the same issue sometimes. Go to aperature mode, then what? Thanks.
