Well, had a bit of time and energy (rare to have both at the same time these days) and decided to go at the trunk lid of the Lexus. Got my PC, a 5.5 inch LC Tang, and OPT Hyperpolish and went to work. Clayed with ONR and Pinnacle Poly first. Was thinking of doing Opticoat but... Looked good at first look but when the sun popped fully out from behind the clouds I could see the dread spiderwebs. They weren't bad, but they were there so I didn't want to lock them in. Don't want to be too aggressive but I'm thinking about going to my cyan pad. So, what information do I need to give you to help me not muck this up too badly. Also, was suprised by the Hyperpolish. Was expecting something more liquid than the hand cream consistency steam that sprayed out across the length of my car
IIRC, HP has dimishing and non-dimishing abrasives. You might want to test other pad combinations. I haven't used my hyper polish (even though I love my hyper compound), but I have seen some people post here that it doesn't finish that well on soft clears.
Are you saying you now have swirled your paint, or do you still see spiderwebs, etc., that can come from washing ? What was the condition of the paint before you started your process ? Do you think you introduced the paint issue you described ? Are you thinking you want to try to get your paint clear for Opti-Coat with a 1-step process ? The L/C Cyan Pad will certainly correct better, but not knowing exactly what you have, makes it more difficult to advise. Have any pics ? What speed were you using ? If you didnt have it running all the way up, that may have contributed to not getting it fully corrected too. Yes. Optimum Hyper Polish doesnt exactly have a user-friendly spray nozzle yet, but believe they were working on it, just dont know the outcome.. It is best to hold the nozzle right on the pad and squeeze the trigger gently to release the thicker material onto the pad, rather than spraying it all over the vehicle surface, in my experience. If you have Optimum Compound, it will certainly correct better, if that is what you are really needing, and then followed by their Polish with the Tangerine, or finer pads, or even a 3rd step with a finer pad and and a finer polish, etc... Good luck, keep us posted . Dan F
As far as I can tell, these are still the dealer installed swirls. Upon reflection, I think I did make a slight difference for the better. Part of my angst is that I'm putting pressure on myself to get 'perfect' before I put on the opti-coat. I'm thinking I might have to get a swirl light so I can get better looks and not rely totally on sunlight. I'm not sure that the swirls will show up on pics (especially without a light as above). I was using setting 5 for most of the correction (on my PC) but did go up to 6 for a bit. Thanks for the help. Oh, and I'm not married to the Hyperpolish. Like OPT products but would consider something else if it would give better results with my skill level. Here's what I have available: Hyperpolish Prima Swirl (as well as cut and finish/ got a bundle) Prima Pads (a couple each from orange cut down to black wax) 2x LC Hydro Tang (5.5 low profile) 1x LC Hyrdo Cyan (ditto)
Mask off half of the trunk and do a test-spot to compare the results with the masked off section. Try different techniques. I don't have a PC, but when I use my DA polisher (Flex 3401), there is a huge difference between results when I use different buffer speed, different arm speed, and different amounts of pressure...along with different pad/polish combinations. Too many people just polish too fast. With a PC even at the highest speed you can go very slow without burning anything.
The pad is a finishing pad technically. Maybe try the cutting pad, speed 5-6 slowly 1-2inches a second. They could be deeper swirls in the paint, or maybe you were going to quickly.
If the pad combinations I have don't end up working. I also have prima swirl. Does anybody have experience with it and can tell me how it compares cut wise with Hyperpolish? Also, threw on some Prima Hydro when i gave up on getting it corrected the other night. Will I need to strip it off? It was the least durable thing i have.
