Got a quick question on this one...I've been reading about wet sanding lately and have one (I think) simple question.

So obviously you would never start out sanding something without measuring the paint thickness to ensure you have enough material to work with. How do you know how much of that is clearcoat that you can afford to take off???

And what are good numbers before you even consider sanding or major correcting with compounds?? (yes...I know that was two)

And is it true orange peel is always on the surface and therefore can theoretically be sanded out? (yes, I know that was three:)

While I don't believe this applies to every car, as a general rule, taking a few measurements in the door jamb area and comparing that to some readings from the hood or roof can help you determine how much clear there is. Because jambs do not always get clear on them, the difference between these two numbers can give you a ballpark figure on how much clear coat there is.

Most folks like to be have a total micron reading of over 110 to sand, perhaps some others will chime in.

Not sure about your third question.

Not avisable to sand factory clear to rid the orange peel. Most factory clear is not thick enough. Through the 6 years I've been polishing my hood, there is no more orange peel, but I'm down to 90 mic. Haven't polished the side panels as much so have about 110 mic, but still have OP.
