So, I've been contemplating buying a Pontiac G8 GT or GXP over the past month, but with this past Monday's announcement about Pontiac biting the dust I'm a little hesitant. I've test drove both the GT and GXP and really like them both, although I think the GT would get me about 90% of the GXP without the added costs. I was kind of waiting to see what mid-year bonuses look like for work and go from there. My concerns are service for Pontiacs going forward, resale prices, warranty work, etc. I think the warranty would be backed by the US Treasury or something and I'm sure any Chevy dealer could probably work on the car. I would probably keep the car 4-5 years, so resale value is probably my biggest concern. I was eyeing up a Stryker Blue Metallic to offset the Carbon Black Metallic GMC Acadia we have. BTW, this car would be replacing my '04 Aud allroad which is currently on my shit list for various reasons, as is Audi in general. Any thoughts or ramblings out there?
You know me Jonny, I'd tell you to get the GXP. What else did you have in mind? And something tells me the Pontiac name will be back.
Pontiac biting the dust? I though it was Buick that was biting the dust, just like Oldsmobile... As far as servicing, most of GM vehicles are very similar, with exception of Saab and Opel, therefore servicing it shouldn't be a big deal. As far as resale value, it depends how many miles you get on that thing...to be honest with you, if I'd be getting a car from GM in the category you are looking in, I'd be looking at this new Camaro...
This is what I heard...Pontiac...Saturn...Saab and Hummer which are all in the GM group. Will be discontinued or sold...But who knows what will happen or how it will happen...
I'd keep Pontiac and Hummer and shut down Buick...such an ungly vehicle...and I totally agree with Jeremy Clarkson (TOP GEAR), it's rubbish!!!
You will be okay on your warranty work. Don't worry about that. Your parts should be there for 10yrs. unless GM goes bankrupt and they don't have to do a thing parts wise. However, most parts are used throughout with the exception of parts exclusive to the brand. Resale..GM's resale is very poor to begin with so it shouldn't really be a concern 4-5yrs from now. Opel is the same as Saturn, Pontiac and Chevy. The only vehicle that is diff. is the Saab. Saab-----Doing their own thing Saturn----GM no longer producing after 2009---look for possible buyer or done Pontiac----No longer producing after 2009----done completely Hummer----No longer producing after 2009----Reviewing bids Buick is part of the core and more than likely won't go anywhere since it's the #1 selling car in China. Talk is that certain Pontiac will be rebranded as a Buick. Does that mean the Grand National could come back....hmmmm.
Johnny buy the car you won't be disappointed. Even with Pontiac going away you'll still be able to buy parts for the G8. The G8 is built in OZ as a Monaro. Lots of neat aftermarket parts are available for the car as well.
Pontiac hasn't been the same since the TA years. The franchise was and is dead. As mentioned before, Buick is China's top selling vehicle. All in all Buick>Pontiac. Hummer---is considered a bad apple with the public so GM had no choice. The best thing that could happen is another buyer coming in for Hummer. Since our media never says anything positive about US built vehicles they led the sheep to believe that Hummers are the biggest gas guzzlers out there which they're not. I can name several imports that are the same if not worse as well as having to use premium fuel.
The Hummer is too bad for GM's image...even if they were selling more the 10k units a year, theyd still be horrible for GM's public image. Buick makes too much money for GM, as well. They need to stay. Get the G8, great car. What does the GXP add besides HP over the base V8? Brake or suspension upgrades? Limited slip diff standard? Theyve sold so little that they could be worth a lot in a few years simply because theyre so rare. Less then 12k sold so far? Id bet theyll maintain their value quite well. The fact that they use an LS engine and the car is cheap and drives well means that the LS aftermarket community will love buying these. Look at the first gen CTSV, its value has been holding really well considering...
Hmmmm, I kind of had myself talked into buying the GT version, but Greased make some good points. The GXP adds about 50 or so HP, front Brembos, and a stiffer suspension. As for the interior goes, it has a bit of a beefier steering wheel and I'm not 100% sure, but I think the leather quality is better on the GXP. Of course, only a detailer would notice something like this. We'll see what the bonus action brings here in a couple of months, but I don't think there are a whole heck of a lot more GXPs coming to the states and not sure about 2010 production at all. Taking a wait and see attitude.
If you plan on getting rid of it, why chance the loss in value on a marque that is going to be gone? I have no suggestion as to what you could get instead, but I would RUN from anything American that is not FORD right now... If you're concerned with resale, look at the values of each manufacturer's stock. FORD took no bail out money, and has been running a more streamlined operation since the scare of bankruptcy. I have never owned a FORD, nor do I plan to (Mondeo would be nice if it were available here in the States). Concerning Audi, they're not shit! They have a perfectly good 3 year life. Maybe consider a lease on the Pontiac if that's even possible.
GMAC doesn't lease anymore. And I wouldn't recommend leasing through US Bank since the residuals are horrible.
Man, if that ain't the truth!!! Regarding the Fords, my neighbor has me looking at the new Ford Taurus SHO coming out as a 2010 model this year. 365 HP, AWD, and a Sony sound system which is a nice change of pace from all the bose crap you see in cars. I think our bonuses are getting paid at the end of July, so I cannot make any moves before then. We'll see what things look like then.
both cars look amazing from what i see on google. wished we were lucky enough to get them over here.:thumb:
